Chelsea's Whole30 Journey

Hi y’all! My name is Chelsea, and I am a trainer at Piranha. I am also a total foodie! I will try just about anything, and it’s rare to find a food I don’t like to eat. But like many of you out there, I’ve struggled with self-control, weight gain and emotional eating.

Piranha Fitness Studio’s owner and good friend, Lindsay, introduced me to the paleo diet a year and a half ago. Also known as the caveman diet, it consists of eating like our ancestors: protein, vegetables, fruit, and nuts. Sure, there are some specifics, but that’s the gist!

But wait… what about bread, and cheese, and milk?? Sorry, no grains, dairy or legumes are included in the paleo diet. Now, don’t freak out or stop reading just yet!! I felt the same way as you – “There is no freaking way I could give up bread or cheese, two of my favorite things!”

But I did… well kind of. I started to cut “bad stuff” out of my daily eating habits, but still went back to them on the occasional “cheat” day. I stayed on my game for a while, but then cheat days started coming around more often, and it became easier to make excuses for bad food decisions. I eventually started having a bad relationship with food – I felt unsatisfied after eating grilled chicken and veggies, but I felt guilty after enjoying a delicious piece of pizza.

I knew I had to do something stricter, without “cheat” days or exceptions. So I turned to Whole30. Whole30 is a 30-day nutritional program designed to change your life in 30 days. It is like SUPER paleo. The main idea of the program is food should make you healthy, and when you eliminate “less healthy” foods like sugar, alcohol, grains, legumes, and dairy from your everyday diet, the healthier you will be. The idea of doing something so drastic was a little scary. But I knew I had to go all in. So, on July 16, 2012, my mom and I started our first Whole30.

We both made it through all 30 days, and my mom lost 15 pounds! I didn’t keep track of my weight loss, but I can tell you I felt great! My bloating disappeared and I felt lean and fit.

Now that I have come to the end of my holidays, and I’m feeling a little heavy… Ok, a LOT heavy, I’ve decided to do another Whole30! I will be journaling in my new Piranha food/workout journal (you can buy yours at our front desk today), and at the end of the 30 days, I will post another blog entry to share my struggles and accomplishments.
