Erica's Success Story

My name is Erica De Luna and as many of you know, I also am an instructor at Piranha. However, years before joining, I was living a very different lifestyle in which how I physically and emotionally felt wasn’t a priority.

Although I have lost weight through my fitness journey, never did I believe I was “overweight” in my before picture. I was very content with myself as I am now, but the bigger picture for me was acknowledging how I truly felt. I have always been active as I was involved in sports throughout middle and high school. However, eating healthy was not a priority for me, and I ate anything I pretty much wanted to.

The biggest trigger to start my fitness journey was when I moved from El Paso to College Station to attend Texas A&M. I was extremely stressed and had always suffered from severe migraines. I began by simply running and working out at the gym in the university recreational center to alleviate some stress. It was very difficult to maintain a consistent schedule, stay motivated, and as every college student knows, eat healthy on a tight budget. It was not until I began working as a teacher that a good friend told me about Piranha. I took one class for free and was immediately hooked since to me it was like a dance party, and I didn’t even realize how much I was sweating off! From then on, all the instructors at Piranha and the overall framework of group fitness motivated me to seek my certification as a fitness instructor. This all came at a perfect time as I had just joined power training and was more motivated than ever to become a better version of “me.”

I have now been a Piranha member for almost 3 years and an instructor for a year and half. I also participate in power training, which has been one of the most amazing parts of my fitness journey. It has helped me relieve stress, push myself past my perceived limits (in a good way), made me stronger (physically and mentally), and I leave every class with more energy than what I started with. For me, my fitness journey has consisted of learning to deal with emotions, stress, and to listen to my body overall.

Since day one, Piranha has been a place that has filled me with confidence, energy, and overall, has helped me develop the positive mindset I needed to not just get through a tough workout, but to live a healthier lifestyle. I started focusing a lot more on my food choices a couple of years ago when I was introduced to Whole30 and completed a 30 day challenge with the support of Piranha members and instructors. This challenge really taught me how to listen to my body and acknowledge the effects of healthier food choices on my energy levels, my stress levels, and even on the frequency of my migraines.

Piranha is and will always be one of the biggest blessings in my life as it has reminded me that in order to take care of/teach/love others, I first need to take care of myself. So find whatever reason or passion that motivates you to be the better version of “you” and even though you may not be there YET, remember you are improving yourself every step of the way.
